How to protect from H1N1
During the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus spread, many people have been asking how to protect from H1N1. H1N1 is a recently discovered, contagious virus. People called it “swine flu” because laboratory testing revealed that its gene segments were similar to that of influenza viruses found in pigs. It contains avian genes, human genes and two genes from flu viruses that commonly circulate in pigs of Asia and Europe.
In order to know how to protect from H1N1, one must know how the virus spreads.
What will help?
The virus spreads via person-to-person contact similar to other influenza viruses. It is a respiratory virus. Cover your nose and mouth with a disposable tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw it immediately after using. Wash your hands using soap and water as frequently as possible. In the absence of soap and water, use rubbing alcohol or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Avoid touching possible portals of entry such as your eyes, nose or mouth. Try to avoid close contact with sick people or keep away from others if you think you are exhibiting flu-like signs and symptoms.
Be ready in case you get sick or you need to travel. Have the following items handy: supply of over-the-counter medicines, tissue, alcohol-based hand rubs and other items related on how to protect from H1N1.
What will NOT help?
Several misconceptions will not help you if you are asking how to protect from H1N1. Eating pork or pork products does not cause H1N1. Therefore, avoiding these will not protect you.
If you are no longer a child but you are younger than 65 years old, you are at a lesser risk for H1N1. However, even if your age means you have a lower risk of getting the flu, certain risk conditions (such as pregnancy, heart disease, diabetes, asthma, kidney disease etc.) may predispose you to more severe complications.
Cases with the H1N1 flu virus range from mild to severe. Although, a great number of people who have contracted H1N1 flu have recovered without the need for medical treatment, hospitalizations and deaths have occurred. Based on all these, it pays to know how to protect from H1N1.
